LEAGUE OF LEGENDS
League of Legends (LoL) is a 2009 multiplayer video game developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a custom map for Warcraft III, the founders of Riot began to develop a standalone game in the same genre. In LoL, players take on the role of an invisible “summoner” who controls a “hero” with unique magic and fight against a team of other players or computer-controlled heroes. The goal is usually to destroy the opponent’s “Nexus”, a structure located at the core of the base protected by defensive structures. Of course, there are other game modes as well.
With many gamers being highly competitive, League of Legends is no joke. When you climb that ranking scale, you feel like you’re accomplishing something great. Basically, as you improve as a player, you get rewards. Yes, in a solo queue, there is a lot of excitement and uncertainty, but that is mostly because the game is so competitive.
Something that drives players to keep climbing the ranking scale is knowing that if they keep moving up, they might have a chance to play against professional players.
League of Legends received mostly positive reviews; critics noted its accessibility, character design, and production value. The game’s long lifespan has led to critical reappraisal, with positive reviews trending. However, the negative and abusive in-game behavior of its players, criticized since the game’s early beginnings, persists despite Riot’s attempts to address the issue. In 2019, the League once again reached the peak of eight million concurrent players, and its popularity has led to its connection with other art forms, such as music videos, comic books, short stories, and the animated series “Arcane.”
